Greyhound is another mixed bag from 2020, but it contains just enough positive elements that I came away not regretting the time that I spent watching it.
From a filmmaking perspective, Greyhound is masterfully crafted. Tom Hanks turns in another great performance, although there was minimal character development and the role wasn't anything that an actor of less quality couldn't have pulled off.
The sound was effective, as were the visuals. My favourite element in Greyhound was the cinematography and the atmosphere it created. The film felt like it took place in World War 2, and that was vital in order for the film to work.
Unfortunately, what stops Greyhound short of even being a good film is the fact that it was boring for a lot of the runtime, and it was extremely repetitive. I was surprised when I saw that the runtime is barely 90 minutes, but I don't think they could have stretched the story on for any longer.
There was barely a script to the film, and that's a shame because Greyhound had the structure to be so much more than it ended up being.
I can see some people getting some enjoyment from it, and it's one of the best films of the year in terms of filmmaking, but I couldn't get past how dull and uninteresting the story was. I can't go too low with my score, but I wouldn't recommend it to most people.
